Mental Health

Mental health refers to your cognitive, emotional, and behavioral healthiness for a happy life. In a nutshell, it is how to react, behave, think about everything in your life. It is important for a person to balance their emotions, work, relationships, and responsibilities. When balancing you will attain psychological resilience. When this balance is interrupted by external or internal factors you will have an effect on your daily activities, physical health, and mental health.

We are facing lots of challenges with mental health globally.

Mental health in India

India had become a global hotspot to mental illness as one in 7 people get affected by any mental illness like depression, anxiety to serious issues like schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder. WHO has coined India as “the most depressing country”. The main reason behind this is there is no awareness among the society. People do shame and isolate people with mental health issues and make them more prone to various other mental disorders. So these issues need immediate redressal.

Common mental disorders

Regardless of their age, gender all the people are vulnerable to mental illness at any time. The main factors involved are biological factors, choice of lifestyle, continuous social, and economic pressure. The most common type of mental illness are,

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Schizophrenia disorders

Anxiety disorders

It is the most common type. People have conditions related to fear or severe anxiety issues. Many try to control themselves by staying away from things that trigger the issue. GAD(General anxiety disorder) is a type of this, where people suffer the whole day worrying. It is followed by extreme fatigue, muscle cramps, and insomnia. They may get into anxiety without any external trigger.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD) is people will have a persistent stressful thought and they do any activity repetitively like washing the hands often.

Post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) is people feel they are lost and they feel very unsafe about their personal life and surrounding. This may due to events like death or any huge loss.

Mood disorders

It is also called an affective disorder or depressive disorder. A person with this has severe mood swings. The general types are,

Major depression: People suffering from this will feel serious sadness for a very long time and loses interest in all their daily activities.

Bipolar disorder: An unusual change of pattern in their mood and energy level. They have two phases, the Manic and the depression phase.

Seasonal affective disorder(SAD): Change in daylight or seasons may trigger this type of disorder.

Schizophrenia disorder

People become hard to process what they see and feel. All their thoughts get fragmented. They have hallucinations, delusions, lack of interest.

Mental health and memory

Amnesia is a general term for memory loss in a shorter span. But amnesia related to mental illness is called dissociative amnesia. Due to stressful even or loss of their loved one people try to remove them from their memory and become over stress. This makes their mind to have a memory loss about a span of time or even a year.

It prevails more in women than men. People tend to confuse their mind processing and they suffer from anxiety and depression. 

Treatment

The most common form of treatment is by communicating. Doctors try to collect all the related information through questions and sessions of counseling. Other treatments include

  • Psychotherapy(encouraging the patient’s communication by certain methods)
  • Cognitive therapy(Changing thinking pattern by using simulations or virtual tour)
  • Medications(antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs)
